I'm Uncomfortable
So many dogs feel uncomfortable or become overexcited when they encounter real life scenarios that they don’t know how to deal with so they pull, bark, howl, run away, run towards, lunge, etc. to try to control the situation that is making them feel uncomfortable or overstimulated.
Wouldn’t it be great if the dog would just ignore the snow blower/person/another dog/runner/cyclist/etc. and simply maintain their heel?
The way we can accomplish this is by teaching the heel (position and calm state of mind) and correcting any shenanigans. So we are telling the dog what we want (calm heel) AND what we don’t want (lunging, barking, etc.)... and a nice walk doesn’t need to be fancy or technical... any dog can do it! It’s just a matter of finding the simple balance of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’.
