What if "Out" doesn't work?!
So what do we do if we ‘out’ the dog from his bone and he scoots off with it? Or picks up something valuable on his own and won’t give it up? Or lays on top of it? Or holds on to it? Cooper has already learned how to ‘Out’ from the food bowl on command (mentally and physically disengage), and we’ve also been working on using the ‘Out’ command for other valuable objects ... here are a few of the outtakes as we work through ‘outing’ a delicious bone.
Scenario: I ask the dog to ‘out’ the bone that he’s chewing on and he chooses to scoot away with the bone instead. As he’s doing this I will say ‘No’ as I tap his remote collar at his motivational level for this situation (the level that motivates him to drop the bone and walk away from it). Once the dog drops the bone, I then send him to place so that I can safely go in and pick up the bone. In a second scenario the dog is hanging onto the bone but not chewing it. These are still situations where I want to ‘out’ the dog from the item of value because when he is this close to the bone he would still likely be tempted to guard it. So I give the ‘out’ command and once he mentally and physically removes himself from the item, I send him to the place cot and then I can go get the bone. Always make sure that the dog removes himself both mentally and physically from the item BEFORE you go in and pick it up.
