Using training and structure to manage ‘Pica’

Some dogs have an odd and dangerous obsession with eating non food items like socks, masks, paper, hair scrunchies, etc. and so this is something that we have to be very conscientious about always correcting should the dog attempt it and also removing the opportunity for the dog to practice ‘pica’ (the medical term for eating non food items) by always picking up after ourselves and not leaving this stuff accessible to the dog. In the house, we can also use our place command to remove free roaming so that the dog can’t go snooping around the house in search of inappropriate things to ingest.
