Exercising your dog

How much exercise does my dog need? What’s too much and what’s too little exercise? This is a fantastic question!

Exercise is so important for our dogs but the way we exercise them is the key to it being constructive, healthy and fun (for both of us!) The most important way we can challenge and exercise our dogs is by MENTALLY exercising them... a dog who works hard using her brain (heeling on a structured leash walk, holding command calmly around distractions, impulse control exercises, structured games with rules, etc.) will be far more tired (and better trained!!!) than a dog who only gets physically drained by allowing her to practice over excitement, disconnection from the handler, impulsive and naughty behaviours, wild behaviour, etc. Our dogs get really REALLY good at what we allow them to consistently practice... whether that’s crazy overexcited running about or calm and polite behaviour. But wouldn’t you rather they be really good a calm and polite stuff? Then that’s what they need to practice!
