WORKING AROUND FORMER TRIGGERS
After working on remote collar obedience commands, on and off leash, we began incorporating some new and bigger distractions into our work! As a dog works on his off leash recalls and holding commands, we have squirrels and birds in the yard beside us, people and dogs walking by on the street and even some neighbours adjacent us out in their yard! These are the types of distractions that may have triggered reactivity in the past and also keep a dog mentally aroused and extremely tuned out aka distraction/trigger obsessed! When first starting out working through his recalls in this new environment, you will see the dog making all sorts of errors and mistakes that we didn’t see in less distracting environments. This is very normal when we up the distractions ante and also a great example of why it’s so important to work our dogs in and around many different environments and situations starting with calm ones and gradually working up to busier ones. Using our remote collar communication training approach, you can refocus the dog on our work and tune back in each time he goes off course by correcting each mistake and then guiding him back on track as we do our recall work.
