STAY IS IMPLIED, NOT TAUGHT SEPARATELY!
We build the implied stay into our obedience commands (sit/stay, down/stay, and place) by correcting the breaking of command and reinforcing the dog for holding it. In the video, I’m beginning to teach Sophie how to hold her down/stay and place commands by correcting popping up/guiding her back into command and also rewarding her with some food as she holds command. For dogs who aren’t food motivated, just leave that step out and do lots and lots of reps! It’s handy to leverage food when we have food motivated dogs, but it’s certainly not necessary for training... if the dog isn’t interested in food rewards then we just go ahead and train the dog anyway!
