Should I allow excitement?
When checking in on the progress of the follow command and a dog’s impulse control, I pick up the pace and then sprinkle in a few other commands. When I start to jog, sometimes a dog gets really excited and breaks command, skipping off towards the gate and his friends. So rather than chasing him, I simply go in the opposite direction and calmly call him back to my side using his remote collar. Dogs can easily get distracted and make impulsive choices when the get excited which is why we have to spend SO MUCH TIME practicing the calm stuff (because life in general sometimes the pulse is into exciting situations... like jogging lol!) Overexcitement is easy and fun and it’s what everyone wants to do... it’s like eating cake and ice cream. Nobody wants to deal with the bad behaviours that are the symptoms of over excitement... reactivity, impulsive behaviour, pushy/rough behaviour, not listening, tuned out, etc. but they go hand in... just like gaining weight is a symptom eating too much cake every day😜 So if we want to eat cake sometimes, then we need to make sure our diet is otherwise healthy and we’re getting plenty of exercise to compensate for the extra calories... just like if we want to indulge in a bit of excitement then we better make sure that the rest of our relationship with the dog is filled with lots of boundaries, structure, impulse control and tons and tons of the calm stuff to compensate for the excitement. It’s all about keeping everything in balance.
